On New Years Day we make big resolutions to feel happier and more fulfilled. Yet outside of major moments like holidays and vacations and celebrations, we spend our days running errands; working; enjoying time with friends and family; being a caregiver; learning; pursuing passions; solving problems.

Over time I came to view life as a collection of Wednesdays—those simple moments in the middle of our true life lived—and instead of making big resolutions I should embrace these small moments as sources of happiness.

Joy exists in these ordinary moments, and on the other side of sorrow and loss. It is this emotional contrast that helps us feel what it means to be human, to find and appreciate that which makes us happy. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”

This is a journey I have been traveling, and one I hope leaves footprints familiar to yours.
